Aged Tonewood Stash

UPDATE 7/10/2015: WE DID IT! Thank you for your orders, and to everyone who reached out with good wishes, enthusiasm and support!

original post:

I have a rare opportunity to acquire a retiring luthier’s stash of gorgeous, pre-ban Brazilian Rosewood, hand-picked, highest quality German spruce, maple, mahogany ebony and other miscellaneous tonewoods. For a luthier, well aged tonewoods are of utmost importance. This wood has been curing since the early 80’s and is ripe for a metamorphosis into musical instruments.

Please help me get this wood to my shop. In return, I am offering several seriously sweet deals! Scroll-down to see how you can get your own guitar built with these luscious tonewoods!

The collection of European spruce was hand-picked by the late master-luthier Robert Lundberg, who traveled to Germany in the late 70’s and 80’s to teach lute history and construction courses in Erlangen, Germany. Guild of American Luthiers book on lutes says the following of Mr. Lundberg: “his encyclopedic knowledge, insightful analysis, and mastery of woodworking techniques grew out of a distinguished 30-year career in which he examined and measured over 250 extant ancient lutes and built hundreds of fine instruments”

Long considered the golden standard of guitar tonewoods, this pre-ban Brazilian rosewood was cut from thick, quarter-sawn slabs. The wood was legally harvested in the early 80’s when it was still readily available.

Among the wood stash there is some ebony, mahogany, maple, and killer-flame Koa. Anyone with a hankering for a Koa classical or a flamenco guitar?!

Please take a look at the following ways you can help. Thank you for considering to partner with me, to bring this fine stash of tonewood to my shop.

SOLD  Aged Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce classical or flamenco guitar, built for you! What’s the catch? You will need to pre-pay the total amount, and wait a little longer (up to 18-months) to receive your guitar. Only three (3) guitars will be offered at this price.

SOLD Free Upgrade to an aged German spruce soundboard, with a $1000 build deposit. This offer is limited to five (five) orders.

Don’t need a guitar? Please consider making an investment in artisanal lutherie and the Spanish guitar. As makers, we have no lobbyists, bail-out funds, political committees or federal funding. Your love of guitar, and your support will be greatly appreciated. I will keep you updated on the progress of this tonewood fund, and will send you a box of fragrant shavings, once the stash is in my shop. Thank you!

If I still have your attention, I would like to mention one more thing. I strongly believe this wood ought to go to a single, competent luthier, rather than be sold one or two sets at a time, to random makers. Why? The majority of this wood are sister sets, cut from the same tree. A sensitive maker has a valuable opportunity to gain keener insight into these materials, improving the outcome of each successive guitar. It’s a bit like getting to know the tonewood family, rather than meeting tonewood strangers with every new guitar project.

That is why I am so determined to get my hands on the entire stash. In a way, the point is less about “ownership” and more about becoming a custodian. I hope that over the past 15 years of lutherie, I have proven myself to be a skillful craftsman, as well as someone capable of handling tonewood with a deep sense of appreciation and responsibility.

Thank you for reading this post, and for supporting this project. Don’t hesitate to leave your comments, or call with any additional thoughts or ideas. You can reach me directly at 503-261-3942.

  1. Dear Bill,

Thank you for your kind words! What a delight to hear that your guitar holds meaning in your music, and your heart. That is my highest hope, to create meaningful connections for musicians and the muses that surround them.

As to the reasonable donation for the shavings box…it is entirely up to you. I will not withhold a box of shavings, be it a $1 or $.50. Anything north of that, will be helpful in my efforts to secure this rare tonewood stash. Whatever is on your heart, Bill, will be appreciated dearly. Thank you.

  2. Thank you, January. What an honor! I will strive to do my utmost to do well by these tonewoods.

  3. Darren Hippner says:

    Great opportunity Peter!

What do you think a reasonable donation would be for a shavings box?

By the way, the Maple/Spruce guitar still brings me to tears at moments–she is SO responsive and lyrical!

    Yours,
    Bill
